While we were on vacation I was on the lookout for books my daughter could read; books that would hold her interest during a summer where the normally avid readers seemed distracted. I grabbed Episode 1 of the The Daring Adventures of Captain Lucy Smokeheart after having seen it posted on Facebook by a friend. My daughter is always looking for books with female lead characters who go on adventures so I am hoping this this fit the bill. I decided to give it a read first to see what it was all about.
Do you like daring young women, carnivorous mermaids, jungle-dwelling lizard-men, Atlantis, ghost ships, unrequited love, shadows that suck the breath from your lungs, ruthless anachronism, witty banter, calculating ballistics trajectories? Huzzah! This will be your kind of story.
This is the first installment of The Daring Adventures of Captain Lucy Smokeheart, a year-long monthly pirate adventure serial. Read this short ebook to start the voyage — then visit lucysmokeheart.com to solve the puzzle and start the treasure hunt!
It turned out to be a cute and fun little adventure. As noted in the blurb above, it is actually the first installment of a serial fiction series (that was funded through Kickstarter) where an episode is released each month. It is well done with a lighthearted style, fun characters and just enough action and suspense to keep things interesting.
There is also a puzzle to solve in each book, although I haven’t tried to figure that part out. I am not sure what the reading age is for the series but there isn’t really any violence or problematic content that I could see. Would make for good read out loud bedtime reading too.
